Online Radiology and Pathology Referrals: Arrange Your Diagnostic Tests Through 1GP

1GP provides online radiology and pathology referrals issued by AHPRA-registered GPs via phone and video telehealth consultations, available to patients across Australia. If you need a blood test, imaging scan, or other diagnostic investigation, our registered GPs can assess your situation and issue the appropriate referral digitally, without you needing to visit a clinic first.

All referrals issued through 1GP are prepared following a genuine clinical assessment by a fully registered Australian GP, in accordance with Australian clinical guidelines and the standards of the Medical Board of Australia. Referrals are only issued where clinically appropriate and where the investigation is genuinely indicated based on your GP’s assessment.

What Radiology and Pathology Tests Can I Get Referred for Online?

A telehealth consultation with 1GP can result in referrals for a wide range of diagnostic investigations where a clinical assessment supports it. Your GP will review your symptoms, medical history, and current health concerns before determining the most appropriate tests to request.

Common referrals requested through 1GP include:

  • Blood Tests and Pathology Pathology referrals cover a broad range of blood and laboratory tests used to assess your health, monitor existing conditions, or investigate new symptoms. Common examples include full blood count, liver function tests, kidney function tests, cholesterol and lipid panels, blood glucose and HbA1c for diabetes monitoring, thyroid function tests, iron studies, vitamin D and B12 levels, sexually transmitted infection screening, urine tests, and more.
  •  X-Rays X-ray referrals can be issued for assessment of bone and joint concerns, chest conditions, and other indications where plain film imaging is clinically appropriate. Your GP will assess whether an X-ray is the right investigation for your symptoms.
  •  Ultrasound Ultrasound referrals can be issued for a range of indications including abdominal and pelvic assessments, musculoskeletal and soft tissue concerns, vascular studies, and pregnancy-related imaging where clinically appropriate.
  •  CT Scans Computed tomography referrals can be arranged where your GP determines that cross-sectional imaging is clinically indicated based on your symptoms and history. CT referrals are issued where there is a clear clinical need supported by your GP’s assessment.
  •  MRI Scans Magnetic resonance imaging referrals can be issued where MRI is the most clinically appropriate investigation for your situation, such as for musculoskeletal, neurological, or soft tissue concerns requiring detailed imaging.
  •  Health Screening and Preventive Checks Your GP can arrange referrals for routine health screening investigations as part of a preventive health consultation. This may include cardiovascular risk panels, diabetes screening, cancer marker tests where clinically appropriate, and general wellness pathology reviews.

How to Get Your Diagnostic Referral Online

That’s it. Most consultations are completed in 10–15 minutes from the comfort of your home.

What Happens During Your Diagnostic Referral Consultation?

When you join your 1GP telehealth appointment to request a radiology or pathology referral, your AHPRA-registered GP will:

  • Ask about your current symptoms, how long you have had them, and what has prompted you to seek testing
  • Review your relevant medical history, existing conditions, current medications, and any previous test results
  • Assess which investigations are clinically indicated based on your presentation
  • Determine the most appropriate tests to request given your symptoms and history
  • Prepare a referral with the relevant clinical details and testing requirements
  • Send your referral to you digitally so you can attend your preferred provider straight away

Where do I go to have my tests done? Once you have your referral, you can take it to any pathology collection centre or radiology provider across Australia. Major national providers such as Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, 4cyte Pathology, Australian Clinical Labs, and I-MED Radiology accept referrals from AHPRA-registered GPs. Many providers allow you to book online or walk in without an appointment.

How will I get my results? Your results will typically be sent directly to your 1GP doctor, who can then review them with you at a follow-up telehealth consultation. In some cases, results may also be sent to you directly by the pathology or radiology provider.

All consultations are conducted confidentially. Your personal and health information is handled in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles and the requirements of the Privacy Act 1988.

Do I Need a GP Referral for Blood Tests and Imaging in Australia?

In most cases, yes. For Medicare-rebated pathology and radiology services in Australia, a referral from a registered medical practitioner is required. Without a valid referral, you will generally need to pay the full cost of the test without a Medicare rebate.

A GP referral also serves an important clinical purpose. Your GP assesses your symptoms and selects the most appropriate tests for your situation, avoiding unnecessary testing and ensuring that results are interpreted within the right clinical context. This leads to more accurate diagnosis and more appropriate follow-up care.

Getting your referral through a 1GP telehealth consultation means you can have your GP assessment and your referral sorted quickly, from home, without needing to wait for an in-person clinic appointment first.
