Online Prescriptions & eScripts — Get a Script from an Australian GP Today

1GP provides online prescriptions through telehealth consultations with AHPRA-registered Australian GPs. Whether you need a repeat script for an ongoing medication or a new prescription following a clinical assessment, your doctor can issue an electronic prescription (eScript) directly to your phone via SMS or email – accepted at every pharmacy across Australia.

No clinic visit required. No paper. No waiting room. If a prescription is clinically appropriate, you can have your eScript in hand on the same day, from anywhere in Australia – including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Logan, and the Scenic Rim.

What Is an eScript and How Does It Work in Australia?

An eScript (electronic prescription) is the digital equivalent of a paper prescription. Under Australian law, eScripts are legally valid prescriptions – governed by the same National Health Act 1953 regulations and the same Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) rules as any paper script written by your GP.

Here is how the process works when 1GP issues your eScript:

  • Your GP assesses your clinical need During your telehealth consultation, your 1GP doctor reviews your symptoms, medical history, current medications, and any relevant clinical factors before determining whether a prescription is appropriate.
  • The eScript is generated securely If a prescription is clinically indicated, your GP generates your eScript using a secure prescribing platform that is integrated with Australia’s national prescription exchange infrastructure – the same system used by GPs across the country.
  •  You receive a digital token by SMS or email Within moments of your consultation, you receive a unique QR code (called a digital token) sent to your phone by SMS or email. This token is your prescription.
  • Take it to any Australian pharmacy Show the QR code at the counter – or forward it directly to your chosen pharmacy, including for home delivery if your pharmacy offers that service. Over 95% of Australian community pharmacies now accept eScripts.
  • Repeat scripts work the same way If your prescription includes repeats, each repeat is issued as a fresh token after the previous one is dispensed. You can also ask your pharmacist about the Active Script List (ASL) – a digital list that keeps all your current eScripts in one place.

Your eScript is valid for the same duration as a paper prescription – 12 months from the date of issue for most medications (Schedule 8 and certain other medications have different validity periods and prescribing rules).

What Types of Online Prescriptions Can 1GP Issue?

Repeat Prescriptions (Repeat Scripts) If you are already taking a medication and require a continuation of treatment, a repeat prescription may be appropriate following a telehealth review. This is one of the most common reasons Australians use online GP services, avoiding an in-person visit simply to renew a stable, long-term medication.

Common repeat prescription requests include ongoing medications for:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension) and cardiovascular conditions
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Asthma and respiratory conditions
  • Hay fever and allergy management
  • Oral contraceptives and hormone management
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Mental health medications (where clinically appropriate and with an established treatment plan)
  • Cholesterol management

New Prescriptions A new prescription requires a more thorough clinical assessment, as your GP needs to evaluate whether the medication is appropriate for your condition, rule out contraindications, and consider your full medical history. New prescriptions may be issued via telehealth where the clinical assessment can be adequately completed without a physical examination.

Medication Reviews If you have questions about your current medications, dosing, interactions, or whether a change may be warranted your 1GP doctor can conduct a telehealth medication review and issue a new or adjusted prescription where appropriate.

All prescriptions are issued at the individual clinical discretion of your treating GP following a thorough assessment. A prescription is never guaranteed prior to consultation.

Medication Restrictions

What Medications Cannot Be Prescribed Online?

In line with Australian regulations and the standards set by the Medical Board of Australia, there are important restrictions on what can be prescribed via telehealth. 1GP doctors cannot prescribe:

  • Schedule 8 (S8) controlled medications, including but not limited to: Alprazolam, Buprenorphine, Dexamphetamine, Fentanyl, Hydromorphone, Lisdexamfetamine, Methadone, Methylphenidate, Morphine, Oxycodone, Tapentadol, and Pethidine.
  • Schedule 4D medications, including but not limited to: Benzodiazepines (Clonazepam, Diazepam, Oxazepam, Temazepam), Phentermine, Pregabalin, Testosterone, Modafinil, Zolpidem, and Zopiclone.

These medications require in-person consultation and assessment. If you require any of the above, please consult your regular GP or attend a local clinic in person.

If you are unsure whether your medication falls under these restrictions, your 1GP doctor will advise you clearly during your consultation.

All consultations are conducted confidentially in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles and the Privacy Act 1988. Your prescription information is transmitted securely through Australia’s national electronic prescribing infrastructure.

What if the doctor decides not to prescribe? Your 1GP doctor will always give you an honest clinical opinion. Why Patients Across Australia Choose 1GP for Online Prescriptions

AHPRA-Registered GPs

Every prescription issued through 1GP comes from a fully registered Australian GP, compliant with Medical Board of Australia standards for telehealth prescribing. Your eScript carries the prescriber's registration number - the same as any in-clinic prescription.

No Unnecessary Trips to the Clinic

For stable, ongoing conditions, a routine telehealth prescription review removes the need to physically attend a clinic simply to renew a medication you have been taking safely for years.

PBS-Eligible Medications

Where a medication is listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and your Medicare details are provided, your prescription is eligible for the standard PBS co-payment - the same as a script from your regular GP.

eScripts Accepted Everywhere

Your 1GP eScript is accepted at all Australian pharmacies equipped for electronic dispensing - which is over 95% of community pharmacies nationwide, including major chains and independent pharmacies across Brisbane, Gold Coast, Logan, and the Scenic Rim.
